Wingate Hangs

Postby Hoplite » Jan 06 04 4:09 pm

I previously have WinGate 4.x - couldn't get it running - I'd always have a system tray icon with yellow screen that would have message "WinGate Engine Starting" - it never would finish. I had to return to Microsoft ICS.
I have Compaq Aramada M700 w/512 Mb RAM/Ample HDD, running XP 2002 Service Paack 1.

I decided to download version 5.x of WinGate to see if it would start working. No luck. Now I get red screen in system tray icon that says "WinGate Engin Stopped" and I can't get it started (right-click icon and select Start Engine). I can see in process table that GateKeeper.exe is running and consuming LOTS of CPU. I can't get ANY screen from WinGate to come up however, possibly to fool with configuration. Monitor also won't start (at least I can't get the window to appear). Has anyone seen this? I've gone through some posts (many) but couldn't see this issue.
Thanks.

I've seen this once before, in our QA lab, but for the life of me I cannot remember what the problem was. So, a few questions to get my brain kickstarted.

If you go into Service Control Manager, and scroll down to "Qbik WinGate Engine" can you start the service from there ? Is there anything listed in the Event Log that might indicate why the service will not start ?

Last question - did you install with / without NAT ?

I scrapped with that very problem for a couple of hours today! I still don't know what truly fixed it either. When I would start/restart the Wingate engine, the CPU usage would skyrocket bringing my P4-2.4Ghz server to a grinding crawl and never becoming started. Deleted the History files, emptied the cache directory, rebooted the box numerous times, and shut down noncritical services. Eventually it began working again but there was no rhyme or reason as to why. The Win2K Event Viewer - System log keeps getting a DCOM 10010 error. Is that related? Nevertheless, even with the error, it did finally come up. All without Viagra...

Was the DCOM error reported against WinGate / NAT ? The closest match I can find for that is RPC_E_INVALID_PARAMETER (A particular parameter is invalid and cannot be (un)marshalled) which doesn't ring any bells in terms of the WinGate source base. Are you using Kaspersky AntiVirus for WinGate ?

Is the ICS turned off during Wingate attempts?

Try re-installing Wingate and deselect NAT/ENS see if that makes any difference, in light of driver conflicts.

Still fighting the persistent daily crashes but haven't had Wingate hang and refuse to start again since I removed my KAV and reinstalled the latest revision. It appears the ever-growing memory consumption has stopped, too.

Now my server is crashing 2-3 times (instead of once) per day for no apparent reason. There are NO messages or clues in the logs (Wingate or Win2K) as to why it stops responding to clients requests. I was getting data (seeing the services, users activity, etc.) in GateKeeper when I connected externally but not anymore. It connects but remains blank like I'm a normal user with no rights. Works fine on our LAN, though. I've stopped all caching. User & service logging is at a minimum. Wingate is automatically restarted at 0500 daily. Rebuilt the Win2K box. Nothing has helped. This really sucks! In the morning, I intend to remove KAV & PureSight...
