Transfer to new hardware and version update

Postby BarryAZ » Sep 10 09 12:32 pm

Hello -- in the next week I will be moving from a 6 + 6 (12 user) Wingate 6.0 install on a Windows 2000 system to the most recent 6.6x on a Windows XP system. My plan was to try out this combination on the new hardware using the 30 day trial, but since I used the 30 day trial prior to installing 6.x - I believe I will need some authorization from the QBIK folks first. Is there a specific request I need to make for this?

I figure to obtain the existing registry key from the Windows 2000 system for the transfer once things are up and running properly on the new hardware, but until then, I'll need to work with the 30 day trial activation I believe.

Regards

Hi Barry,

I'm sure we can sort your trial license out for you. Can you email your 6 digit trial id to sales@qbik.com. The trial id will be displayed in the red error text at the end of a failed trial activation.

OK - I will once I set up the new hardware -- either later this week or early next week.

Thanks.

OK -- looks like I was OK for a new trial license.

I am having some difficulty in my test set up though.

I can't seem to keep a test workstation connected to the Wingate proxy server (which I have connected to the internet).

It works for a while (5 to 10 minutes), but then the connectivity is lost -- can't ping either way.

I know the NIC is good (I did try multiple NIC's with the same problem).

I know the wire is good, and I know the switch is good.

XP on both the Wingate system and the workstation.

Firewall is off on both workstations.

At the moment, I don't have local AV turned on -- I expect to install AVG on the Wingate system (I've uninstalled NOD32).

I just rechecked, and even in 'pants down' configuration (no AV, no firewall), the connectivity 'evaporates' in a few minutes.

I am sure there is some special incantation that I am missing. Gosh this was so much more transparent in the WinProxy days.

OK -- I think I figured this out -- I was using the same switch which supported my existing (non-test) network. That was ok for the internet access, but not the test internal network. When I set up a second switch -- for the 'internal' side of the Wingate server along with the test workstation, the connection problem appeared to be resolved.

What confused me was that the other set up worked for a bit and then stopped. If it simply didn't work at all, I probably would have tried the two switch setup early on.

Might have been a problem with DHCP if both the internal and external network adaptors were plugged into the same switch. Were the clients in the same IP range as the internet router?

Don't forget that XP SP2 imposed a limit of 10 concurrent connections. Once you hit that limit, you'll start having similar issues.

Fair point on the 10 user limit of WinXP -- not that bit a deal -- the total number of users on the network is 12 or 13 and typically the maximum number needing to access the internet at the same time is less than eight.

Yes -- again, though the 'ok to start' and then problems confused me.

Anyway, that is resolved. Now I have a follow up issue on site. I need to activate licenses which were activated on the old hardware which is no longer functioning. I have the actual license numbers (exported that before the old box died an ugly death), but since they were activated on the old system, I can't activate them online it seems.

Is there a specific email address I can send the information to so that I can a 'reactivation process'. This is at a client site, so I am not posting this query from the site.

Thanks

If you purchased the licenses directly from Qbik, you can login to our website and manage your own license activations through our customer area. This means you don't have to wait for a support tech to view and action your license deactivation request. Your username for the website is the email address that you used to purchase the licenses. If you have forgotten your password, simply enter your username and leave the password field blank when you login. An email will be sent to you with a new password.

If you purchased through one of our resellers, you can either contact the reseller to get the license deactivate, or contact sales@qbik.com with your license details.
