Pre-Sales Newbie Question

Postby Tom151 » Dec 02 10 5:33 am

My knowledge of Network routing and proxy systems is almost nil, so I'm not sure about WinGate capabilities, but I am hoping someone here should be able to answer this question....

I am trying to set something up for our small site, for a few of our people (about 3 or 4) that travel.

I would like to have a computer system here that would give Internet access to our travelers through a VPN connection from the remote user. In other words, if they are traveling and have to use an open unencrypted Wi-Fi (or even a customer site), I would like to make an encrypted VPN to here and then have their requests routed to go out from here for security and privacy. Nothing to do with our LAN or WAN, or access to files (that would be nice but not required)....just internet access so they can do searches, webmail and other work without being worried about security (i.e. simple man in the middle etc.).

It would be nice to be able to filter sites like facebook etc.if possible, but I don't want an expensive firewall (in fact no firewall sounds fine).

IS WinGate the solution I need?

Hi

there are 2 parts to this overall system 1- a VPN, and 2 a WWW proxy.

WinGate actually has potential to provide both these parts, however for single remote users, if you have a windows server (2000, 2003 or 2008) with RAS on it, you can use the free Windows VPN client (PPTP) and get your VPN for free (rather than having to buy a WinGate VPN single user license for each one).

Then it's just a matter of connecting to the web proxy across the VPN.

Are these remote users also allowed to connect directly to the internet on other networks? e.g. from home?

If they are always going to use the VPN and always going through your proxy, they can be set up to do that, but if the configuration needs to change depending on whether they are connecting into your VPN first or not, then that needs to be taken care of.

I'd recommend downloading WinGate and activating a free 30 day trial. We're happy to help with any support requirements during your trial as well.

I tested your permissions, and the new topic button shows fine. You need to be on a forum page, rather than a topic?
