Log file analysis or Internet Access Monitor

Postby zeidrich » Mar 25 12 11:47 am

I tried to post a minute ago, but it didn't appear, so apologies if this is a repost.

Basically, I've recently upgraded to Wingate 7 from Wingate 6. I used to use Internet Access Monitor to view the access logs, but unfortunately the format has changed in version 7 and it will not read it.

Is there a way I can switch back to using the old log format? Otherwise does anyone have a suggestion for another analysis program that will work?

The reports are pretty important for us, and I might have to see if I can revert to version 6 if I can't find something to produce those reports.

Apologies for the double post, I didn't see the message that new posts would need to be moderator approved the first time.

I've given Sawmill a try and I've attempted to configure AWstats to read the logs, and neither of them are really doing what I need. Basically, we're in a very strictly bandwidth limited scenario here. Internet is provided only by satellite and is very expensive, we have only 10GB of data transfer per month before we need to buy additional blocks of data 1GB at a time. We decided to use Wingate primarily for the proxy cache, we have 20 users on the network, and if everyone's system is downloading the same files and automatic program updates, that 10GB disappears very quickly.

I noticed that Wingate 6's proxy cache wasn't always working as well as I'd have expected it to, and noticed that there was the update available so I moved to it. Now the cache seems to be working more reliably, but I'm not able to get the data that I'd like.

What I'm looking for from the logs is basically the ability to be able to see a month at a time or so, and be able to see, in the best case:
A) Total data used per IP over the period.
B) Total data served from cache per IP over the period.
C) Breakdown of site access, ordered by data transfered, grouped by IP over the period.
D) Total data used by all clients, cache used by all clients and site access by all clients over the period.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a way to find this data that's usable with the Wingate 7 software? There are some nice features in thew new version, and I like the visualization for the timeline, but I really need a good way to parse the log to get the data I was able to get from version 6.

It really depends on which one you like the most, you could also take a look at ProxyInspector which added WinGate 7 support in January, they offer a free trial. Out of interest what problems were you seeing with SawMill?
I am surprised that Redline do not have a version of Internet Access Monitor that supports WinGate 7 yet, have you spoken to them at all they may have a new version in the pipeline?

Hi

there are several fields you can turn on in usage logging. One which you may find useful is the cached field, which will tell you if a response is served from cache or not, so you can do reports on that.
