Upgraded to WG 8.0.1, ftp download slow

I've recently upgraded my WinGate to version 8.0.1 and now my users are experiencing slow downloads on secure FTP. To download a 120kb pdf-file now takes about 20mins to download. This was not an issue on my WG7. I haven't change any setting after the WG8 update.

Also, I get "FTP Access Denied" messages even though my users have full permissions.

Looking at the user's activity, I see "ftp:// xx.xx.xx.xx/.... ' document follows" - but nothing follows!

is it possibly something up-stream that changed? Is it just the one site, or all sites now?

That is also what I am thinking - nothing should have changed at all, since I did not touch any settings after the upgrades.

The slow download only occurs on secure ftp's. But if I download a file from an ftp that doesn't require a username and password (i.e. the HP FTP site for driver downloads) the download speed is normal.

Is there any log file I can send you so you might see if my settings are correct?

Another thought, can this situation happen if a port is blocked by our provider? As you may know, our service provider here has blocked the WinGate and QBik site before. Maybe, they have not totally unblocked the ports for the site? How can we know this to be true?

Also, whenever I click on the submit button on this page, I bet a "malformed request - Your browser sent a malformed request" message. I have to back up the page and preview the message and click submit before it goes. Is this also connected to the issue at hand?

this was an upgrade from 8.0.0 to 8.0.1? I don't even think we touched the WWW proxy code.

When you say secure FTPs, do you mean non-anonymous? E.g. you need a user/pass. Are you using IE? For user/pass access with IE, you need to specify the username and password in the URL, e.g.

ftp://user:pass@someftpserver.com/

Here's we're having a bit of a problem... It's actually a site where you have to log-in (https://www.smartforms.com.om/index.aspx). A dongle attached to the machine acts as security key too. Any forms that are in PDF format takes time to download. I've attached a screen shot of wingate activity of the user's ftp.

As mentioned before, this was not the case before the update. Is it possible to downgrade WG to a previous version - just to check if the situation is still true on the old WG.

I triple checked code changes between 8.0.0.4601 and 8.0.1.4608, and there was nothing even remotely affecting the WWW proxy.

Both upgrades of WG 8.0 & 8.1 has the same problem. I had WG 7.1 (the last WG7 version before WG 8.0) installed that did not experience the difficulty... Can I have the download link for the last WG7 version?

Anyways, I had discovered something unusual... I found that if I terminate the process where the document is downloading [ftp://.... Document Follows], the page loads automatically on the users machine! I'm actually using the procedure now just to help the user finish his work.--- What can this be?

For testing if the site had the problem and not WG, I've connected the machine directly to the internet and the page/document loads without a hitch.

Is there a possibility to isolate a user's activity --- like the activity log filter in WG6 on WG8, so I can fully trace what is going on on the users machine?

Just to inform you that I was unable to downgrade back to WG7.1. I'd ran the WG7.1 setup file and after restarting, WG just hangs there with a yellow monitor. I'd looked into the services and found that it never gets the status "started" it only stays at "starting"... How can I go back to WG7?

Another thing I noticed on my FTP dilema is that if the ftp address is an ip address other than a named-server, then the ftp bugs down. i.e. my WG somehow does not allow "ftp://15.24.244.15/..." but it's ok with "ftp://myservername/..."

These are a few things I've notice while trying to figure out the situation.

did you try 7.1 or 7.3.1? The last 7.x release was 7.3.1

It should install over the top, some of the earlier ones probably wouldn't.

Sorry for the very late reply, went on leave for some days...

I had re-installed WG7.3.1, and all my services went back to normal. Still using WG7.3.1 up to now. Afraid to upgrade to WG8.0.1, because the problem with the FTP might re-occur again.

I had not change any settings from all the re-installations.

Did this happen on all FTP links, or just some? We need to try to reproduce the problem.

Yes. The FTP download is back to normal again.

It only happens when the user clicks on a direct link to an ftp server for download. But, if we use an ftp software (ie. winscp), the download works, but sometimes breaks in between.

Is there a way I can log the processes in FTP. I would to try to log the ftp process on WG7, then upgrade to WG8. and compare the logs?
