Slow access in Wingate 6

Postby §naKeEye§ » Sep 16 13 2:36 am

Hi

I have 4 computers running xp pro sp3. 1 of them is the host, running wingate 6.6.4, and the other 3 are the clients. 2 of the clients access wingate without issues, but 1 of them has an issue, which i have narrowed down to a dns/ipv6 issue (Well, i think one of them is the reason)

The 2 clients that can access wingate without issues display in the activity tab with "DNS: A lookups" during the loading of websites, but the client that has an issue is displaying "DNS: AAAA lookups" and is very slow when browsing. A simple google search tells me that an "A" lookup is for ipv4, and an "AAAA" lookup is for ipv6

There are multiple "DNS: AAAA lookup" attempts before a web browser starts to grab the website content and then finally loads the webpage after an average of 10-20 seconds, and even then it takes a little while to finish loading the rest of a webpage

I tried disabling ipv6 on the client, but no joy. Then i tried browsing using the www proxy, which works great, but i'd rather not use a proxy

So, my question is... what's the problem here and how do i fix it ?

Fixed it

Unbinding ipv6 from the adapter wasn't enough, and neither was uninstalling it from the gui. I had to uninstall ipv6 from the commandline using "ipv6 uninstall". What's the difference ?

This leaves the question as to why this xp machine needed ipv6 to be uninstalled. It is the most updated machine out of the 4. Maybe microsoft screwed something up ?

Hi

I think DNS resolution using IPv6 is independent of it being bound as a protocol to an adapter.

There seems to be some ways to get windows to prefer IPv4 over IPv6.

99.999% of all the lookups you do will be IPv4, so it's beyond me why MS would make all these fail a IPv6 lookup first.

Hi Adrien

I found this microsoft article on how to modify ipv6 components in the registry to prefer ipv4 over ipv6, but it's not for xp

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852

Afaik, the only option for xp is to uninstall ipv6

Unless someone else can shed some light on the issue, i can only assume microsoft has made a dirty change as the end-of-life for xp approaches
