client not seeing server

Postby no_Ob » Feb 23 04 11:45 am

i need help

i,ve tried to use dhcp server of wingate, but it does not recognize the interface, it has already been set to have an static ip address, but still, in the bindings page of dhcp properties it doesnt show anything.

after giving up in the dhcp thing, i tried using static addres on both pc's (one with winxp pro, other with win2k), they see each, they ping each other, they share files between each other, but no internet on wink2k pc (client), so i tried to intsall wingate as a client in this computer, but it does not find the server.

what am i doing wrong?

edit:
i just noticed a warning msg on system messages, it says:
there are no enabled dialer profiles and no default gateway configured, computers using wingate as their default gateway will not be able to connect to the internet.

im thinking this has something to do with the no internet part of the problem, how do i configure de gateway?

Hi there

Sorry for asking the obvious but how is your WinGate Server set up?

Generally you will have a Network Interface(NIC) which connects the WinGate Server to the rest of the LAN, as you described you have.
This interface should be configured with a private IP (such as 192.168.4.1)

The clients on your LAN should have IP addresses in the same subnet range (192.168.4.*) and should have their Gateway and DNS entries,(found in the network properties) set to the private IP address of the WinGate server (in the above case 192.168.4.1)

The WinGate server also obviously requires a network interface of some description to connect to the Internet (usually a modem,NIC to router, DSL modem etc). This IS REQUIRED (obviously) for WinGate to do its job
in serving Internet requests.

Then (as per the WinGate helpfile) you need to decide on how clients access the WinGate server (WGIC,NAT,or proxy) for Internet access.

yep, everything is like you said

winxp pro computer acting as a server, 2 NICs one for the dsl modem, one for the other computer (win2k). the NIC for the modem has dinamic address, and the NIC for the other computer has static address, 192.168.0.1 (255.255.255.0). since i couldnt make the dhcp work properly (it doesnt assign addresses), the win2k pc has static address too (192.168.0.2 (255.255.255.0)).

this way, i can look at the files on both pc's from my netwrok places in either pc, i can share files between them, but still, while installing wingate client isnt able to connect to the server.

one more thing thought, i installed the client on the win2k pc, even thought it didnt found the server when installing, and i tried to surf the web, it didnt work, after that i closed the wingate server en the xp pro machine, and try to surf again on the client, it didnt work either but this time the wingate software told me the server wasnt running, so im thinking somehow the client does know that theres a server (i assign manually an address in the client software, i set it to be 192.168.0.1)

pls excuse my bad english, im trying my best to make it readable. if i said something not understandable, pls tell me so ill rephrase it to make it clear

thx

Hi no_Ob

You seem to have it all configured correctly however I think I found the problem.

Is your DSL modem networking connection listed under the Dialer icon/config in Gatekeeper on the WinGate Server?.

A DSL modem is different to a DSL router which is on usually on line all the time, and so this will be why it receives its IP address dynamically.

To have this dial up type connection used by WinGate, this should be listed under the dialler in Gatekeeper. Check to see that this is enbled and configured to be used by WinGate, in the same way as a normal Dialup connection.

Then that way WinGate will attempt to use the DSL connection to reach the Internet on behalf of clients, just the same way it would use an ordinary modem.

Let me know how you get on

hi erwin

you were right, it wasnt configured, and that part is working now thank you a lot

now i found why the dhcp isnt working, here the thing:
im usin wingate to share internet between the desktop pc (server) and a laptop pc, so, the laptop sometimes isnt there. when i turn on the desktop pc without the aptop, wingate doesnt found the nic. and when i plug the laptop y doesnt detect the new interface, i need to restart the pc with the laptop plug in so wingate will detect the interface.

is there some way to tell wingate to look for interfaces while its on?
can i just restart the service without restarting the pc so it will find the inerfae? and how?

thank you

Hi no_Ob

Glad to hear you sorted it.
WinGate will try and detect any network interfaces whenever the WinGate engine starts.

You can stop and start the WinGate engine by simply right clicking the WinGate engine icon in the systray or from the start/menu entry.
You do not need to reboot the machine completely (which would be a lot of hassle :-)
