Preventing use of paging storage when idle

Postby John_L » Apr 04 15 1:58 am

I have a WIndows XP SP3 - Media Center Edition server running WinGate that does not enter Standby when there is no program activity.

I suspect that this is due to WinGate paging activity.

Is there a parameter/control that disables the use of paging storage while idle?

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

Hi there.
Paging is an operating system function used in order to alleviate memory issues by switching out inactive programs and their data to disk. If this is the sort of paging your are seeing then an application on your system would seem to be using far too much memory. If it is WinGate using that memory then we definitely need to look at that.

If your issue is simply that WinGate is actively working then that would be hard to alleviate completely as WinGate's job is to monitor your network traffic. You could try the following steps and see if that helps.

Disable HTTP Cache
Disable Logging
Do not use any file based data lists
Disable updating of IP to country lists in the Scheduled Events section of WinGate.

Out of interest, do you have Wake-on-LAN turned on on your computer/OS and what is your primary use of WinGate, as a proxy?

Regards
Aaron
