I have 4 workgroups with about 50 users

My question is can I configure VPN for users to dial in with workgroup. If yes, how?

I need as much detail instruction as posible.
I am very new at WinGate. Please take it easy on me.

Thanks in advance.

Please Help!!!

Hello, can anybody help me to set up VPN. I have only one week to complete this assignment.

OK

We have 4 work groups and 50 PC
WinGate 5.2.0 on a win2k server
The previous IT guy purchased 25 vpn participants licences and 7 vpn clients for remote users
The dial-in PCs are going to be XP and 2k

On the step-by-step guide in WinGate, it says download the "host" and the "join" version of the VPN product.

When on the web and download but it had only one link to downlaad which is Wingate VPN 1.2.3
http://www.wingate.com/download.php

After I downloaded, I installed it and restarted the PC.

Now, what I have to do on the user's computer in the office (vpn participant) and the user's home pc to dial in?

I really do need help. I need a step-by-step instuction.Thank so much in advance.

Thanks Jono for replying.

The Wingate VPN host running on win2k.
All the join pcs running on xp.
They all connect to the internet via DSL line (Comcast)

As I recently found out that the host and the join have to have the different ranges, is it correct? ( ex: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1)

I have another question though, the old IT person here purchased 7 vpn 1.0.6 licences and left them here for me, but now the 1.2.3 is out. Can't I download the new version and keep the same keys.

Any instruction is really appreciated.

Andy.

Hi andy

Fraid one of the qbik staff would have to answer that, but i assume that if its still in the "1" range the licences would still be good.

probably easier if you msn messenger me on Jono_connor@hotmail.com or email me or click on the WWW button below and post on my site as i spend more time on there now ;) then we can probably speed things up for you.

Hi Andy,

Your old keys will allow you to upgrade to the latest version. Your 25 user license will be ok for allowing 25 concurrent users on the LAN to be availalbe for the VPN, are you also going to have remote users?

You are correct about the IP address ranges, each end of the VPN must be on a different subnet to allow correct routing.

We are putting together a step-by-step configuration guide to post on our website but it's not finished yet, in the meantime I'll copy the text that we have:

To set up a VPN you will need a WinGate VPN host and a WinGate VPN joiner, our VPN will not communicate with a third party VPN. Also, both ends of the VPN must have the appropriate licensing, in your case the trial license is sufficient, but when that expires you'll need to take that into account.

Make sure you have internet access on both the host and the joiner
On the host:
Double click the VPN in the system menu
Select VPN's to host and click Add
Enter a name for the server and select the level of local participation, in your case select Local Network
Go to the policies tab and enter a user or group for access
Go to the X509 certificate tab and click Generate Certificate
Enter a passphrase
Enter details
Click Finish
Click ok to generate the certificate, this can take a couple of minutes and you will receive a system message notifying you when it has been done.
Click Export configuration and enter the host server's external IP address or domain name
Either email the config file or save to a floppy for import to the joiner

On the Joiner:
Click VPNs to join
Select import Config
Select your configuration file
Enter a username and password (must be a valid username on the host)
Choose level of participation
Click ok

Your VPN should now be setup, to join it go to the network tab, right click the VPN and choose connect. You should see the connection and be able to browse the remote LAN.

If you have a firewall in front of the WinGate server, (not the WinGate firewall) you'll have to open port 809 TCP/UDP and map the connection through to the WinGate server.

Also, please note that the two LANs must have different subnets, ie 192.168.0.1 (host) and 192.168.2.1 (joiner) for the connection to work properly.

Regards,

Matt
