problem with XP and DIAL-UP

Postby aga » Mar 24 04 11:31 am

Dear sirs

I was trying wingate 5.2.3 and I find a problem to which I
don't find solution. The same thing happened with
previous versions.

The network is composed by a pc with Windows 2000 or xp (the
server).
The pc clients have windows 98 and xp.
The connection to internet is made by a dial-up modem.

When some pc with windows xp tries to connect with
another of the internal net, immediately wingate establishes
a phone connection.

In gatekeeper it is observed in the activity panel:
http://pcname/
Where pcname is the name from the pc to which the pc
with winxp tries to connect.

Other things that I tryed without result they were:
1) to place the numbers IP of the pc of the net in HOSTS
and LMHOSTS by means of DNS/WINS resolver.
2) to place pcname and http://pcname/ as local sites in
dialer properties.
3) in WWW Proxy server properties, policies, ban list,
servername equals pcname.

As you will understand this is very annoying, since every
time that the xp pc are connected, the server pc
establishes a phone connection.

I will thank you any indication that allows to solve this
problem.

Hi Aldo

Are the PCs attempting to communicate with one another via normal Netbios (explorer or network neighbourhood) or by HTTP via Internet explorer)

Usually if you wish to explore or connect to a share/resource etc on another machine you would use a universal naming command (UNC)such as \\PCname or \\192.168.4.3 (where this IP address is the IP of the machine called PC name.

When using http://PCname type command it tells the PC to use the Http protocol which will make it attempt to connect to the Internet.

Try this different approach to see if it will stop trigging the dialer in WinGate.

You can also read the knowledge base articles on spontaneous dialing in WinGate to see if it might provide clues as to what could be making it dial.
You can find these on our website here:

They attempt co communicate using windows explorer or network neighbourhood, but I don't know if it is accomplished with netbios or http.
It seems to be that XP uses http for all.

I do have a problem with one of my clients. The Wingate was installed on a Windows 98 system but the my client is running on a Windows XP. I am always getting a access denied error reading on the computer. Will Wingate work on XP even though the server is running only on a Win 98 environment?

Please help me figure out how would i configure the XP machine.

Thanks
