Single NIC? No static IP.

Postby Waz » Mar 24 04 10:11 pm

Hi, I have a cable connection. In the PC connecting to the net I have a single NIC. The ISP uses proprietary software which connects you to the net through the cable modem. However to get it to work, you have to use DHCP, their software does not support a static IP address. I have two or sometimes three PC which I want to share the internet connection - will Wingate support the single NIC, or must I get a second NIC with Static IP???

IF it will support a single NIC, some pointers on how to set-up would be appreciated. Wingate does recognise the public IP, but I dont see how to set-up the clients if the server does not have a private IP address.

Thanks,
Waz

Hi Waz

You are correct in assuming that you will need a second NIC (with a private IP address statically entered) that will connect the WinGate server to the rest of the LAN.

The LAN client machines can be given an IP address by WinGates DHCP (as it comes with its own DHCP server), or statically assigned a private IP that is in the same range as the WinGate PC.

Then if you set the client DNS and Gateway entries (in their network properties) to the Internal IP of the WinGate machine, all of their Internet requests will be forwarded to WinGate who will inturn use the Public IP on the cable modem NIC to fufill their Internet requests.

This is the NAT (Network address translation) method of connection available in WinGate and is generally the easiest to configure.

For more of an overview on how WinGate uses Private and Public IPs you can read about it at our knowledgebase here:

Hope this helps
