Problem Conecting a server to a VPN

Postby prac » Apr 01 04 9:19 am

I have a network server that I want to Join to a VPN.
The server has Wingate and connects to internet through ethernet.
The server only has one network adapter, but all the instructions I've found for conecting to a Wingate VPN with ethernet are fora server with two network adapters, one for ethernet (with a PPPoe protocol) and another for the rest of the protocols for a LAN.
Is there a way to connect to the VPN if the server only has one adaptter?

Hi Prac

Sorry to sound vague but how do you mean only on Network card (NIC)
Is the Server not connected to the rest of the LAN or is just a standalone?
Do you mean the machine has only network card which is connected to the Internet?

Although the scenario lists the WinGate server with two Nics this is for the purpose of describing the extension that WinGate VPN can provide to your network so that you can reach machines behind the WinGAte VPN host server.

WinGate VPN should work fine when the machine only has one interface,(Obviously an external IP address on the Internet connection) as this is quite a common scenario with remote "roadwarriors" and laptop scenarios.

So configure your server to join the WinGate VPN as normal by importing the VPN configuration file and it should connect fine. It will only publish one route across the VPN.

Hi, thanks for answering so fast.

Yes, the Server is conected to the LAN.

Do you mean the machine has only network card which is connected to the Internet?

The internet connection is through a modem that is connected to a hub, the server has only one network card and it is also connected to that hubb as well as the rest of the machines from the LAN.

WinGate VPN should work fine when the machine only has one interface,(Obviously an external IP address on the Internet connection) as this is quite a common scenario with remote "roadwarriors" and laptop scenarios.

The external IP is not fixed, it is assigned when you connect to internet by the internet provider.

Hi there

OK this clarifies things slightly.

The problem you face is that in this scenario you have described with the "WinGate Server" is only attached to a hub not the actual modem or Internet itself.

The WinGate vpn will have no external interface to use to route packets to the remote network.

As I described in the last post the WinGate server needs to be connected to the Internet through one External interface, not indirectly through a Private interface NIC to hub to modem as you've described.

A suggestion would be to have the modem plugged into the Server itself this way the modem interface will be providing a VPN connection point.

If I have misinterpreted you and the modem is actually on the Server already then this will provide the external interface that is required for you to connect the Server to a VPN when it dials up.
