WinGate/Gatekeeper wont login after install....

Postby ceadda » Mar 28 04 2:57 am

Posting this a second time because stupid aol somehow managed to delete it without submitting...

Just installed wingate last night. After installing and rebooting, it wont login with "Administrator" Everything is running... it says.

"There was a problem connecting to the server. Connection refused by server. Check your server name and port number.

I've tried it with my firewall (McCaffee) on and off, with port 808 opened to the world and with GateKeeper and WinGate granted full unrestricted access and it still says the same thing every time. I've tried with passwords and with every login on my computer, still says it cant login.
I've also tried it with connecting to localhost, 127.0.0.1, and even the ip of the comptuer when its online... nothing.

Any ideas for fixing this? Or a suggestion for a program other than wingate that i can use since this wont even work on the first run? I have AOHell and need to share it to a laptop :(

The first time you login you have to login with a blank password. Make sure that the box to "login to the local machine" is checked.

Yes, i'm not quite that stupid thank you, I did read and follow the installation instructions. However, nothing and no method of logging on with an name, password or no password, admin administrator capital lowercase or anything else will make GateKeeper login. I was indicating this is a problem and want to know what other windows settings to check.

Just covering all bases. The next one, which another customer experienced, was the engine not starting. What colour is the WinGate Engine Monitor's screen, in the Task Bar ? It should be blue.

Can you check that something is listening on port 808 ? (A netstat -an should do that for you, from the command prompt)

The engine monitor is blue. And, when hovering over it, it says the wingate engine is running.

A netstat -an shows that nothing is listening on port 808.

It seems to me that you are having same dificulties as me, so I wonder if you have find solution for it.

The only diference is that my monitor is yelow, displaying starting engine.

If you have solution, please answer.

Thanks in advance.

Get the WinGate Engine to a point where it won't start. (I.e, the engine monitor is red) If it's running as a Service, you should be able to set the service to "Manual" start, then reboot.

Then, go to your WinGate folder, and backup HISTORY.*, then delete HISTORY.*.

Restart the Engine then. It's most likely history database corruption, which does happen sometimes.

Can you check if there is a Remote Control Service listed in the registry ? It should be under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\Wingate\Services\Remote Control Service

If there isn't, a few more questions. Are you running a Trial license, and have you trialed WinGate before ?

There's entry's in the registry at that point. Under 5 subdirectories.

And, its the first time wingate has been installed. As it is a brand new dell dimension 2400.

Ahah! Got it running, finally.

Turned out the problem was the same problem affecting a few of my other network based applications. McCafee is totally and 100% crapware. Lol. Anyway,
After completely deactivating and uninstalling everything made by McCafee, wingate started up and logged right in, asking me to set password. :) Now to go play around with it...

Helo !

I have deleted registry key as I read it in some other topic and it started.
The key was avir plugin.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software\WinGate\Data Scanning Plugins\Installed\Antivirus]
Have I lost something with this.

What about instaling KAV for wingate now ?

Can I point KAV for wingate to search bases directory in KAV comonfiles directory

Thanks !

If you've removed that key, it is related to a shim DLL interface to VisNetic Antivirus that interferes with other Kaspersky products.

You will not be able to use VisNetic AntiVirus until you re-instate that key.

Do you want to have Kaspersky AntiVirus and Kaspersky AntiVirus for WinGate on the same system ?
