Wingate 5.2.2 gateway problem

Postby omg900 » Dec 19 03 9:45 pm

Hi folks!

I am using wingate 5.0.2 on a Win2K ADV Server as a gateway to the internet for 4 workstations. Server and workstations have static private IP's. All works fine and no probs at all. However when I update to Wingate 5.2.2 nothing works (neither the server nor the workstations have internet access). The wingate log shows the following:

12/18/03 12:11:07 192.168.58.14 og4 0000000012 Requested: http://www.microsoft.com/
12/18/03 12:11:29 192.168.58.14 og4 0000000012 Error: Caught socket exception in CWWWSession::HTTPProcessRequest() Connection to Remote Host timed out - terminating
12/18/03 12:11:30 192.168.58.14 og4 0000000012 Traffic 215 419 0 0 23s

Any clue why this might happen and why there is thi problem with wingate 5.2.2 and not with version 5.0.2 ????

Appreciate any enlightment.

Do you use T/R over NAT or the proxies directly ?

Hi Pascal,

what do you mean by T/R? I am having fixed IP-Numbers and I believe I am using the proxies directly. For example www-proxy is set for port 8081. Server is 192.168.58.112 and workstations are 192.168.58.113-117. Internet Explorer on the workstations points to the server IP on Port 8081.

Nevertheless how comes my set-up works fine with wingate 5.0.2 and does not with wingate 5.2.2? Has something changed?

Best regards and wishing you merry x-mas and a happy new year!

T/R (Transparent Redirection) allows you to use ENS, but it feeds the traffic through the proxies. So you get all the benefits of the Proxies, Authentication and Plugins with the ease of configuration of ENS/NAT.

Only reason I thought that could be the case was because most of the major changes have been in the driver, and if you were using T/R you would see the traffic logged against the proxy. (Would've helped to narrow it down a bit)

If, on the Server, you point it's Internet Explorer's Proxy Setting to the local machine (127.0.0.1 - port 8081) can you surf the Internet through the WinGate machine ? From what your log file indicates, there is traffic from the client machine and traffic to the client machine, but no traffic to the internet and from the internet. One thing to try would be to stop the WinGate engine and clear the cache folder.

Is there anything reported on the firewall / history view to give us some more of an indication of where the problem might be ? If there is nothing, can you please turn on Debug Logging for the WWW Proxy Service and then rerun this scenario. Then, repost the snippets from the log file, with the debug information added. (Or email it to me directly)

What error message do you get on the client's web-browser ? Is it a "404 Host not found" or a "500 Internal Server Error" ?

Hi Pascal,

sorry for being silent due to some vacation. Here is what I found out. When I install ver. 5.22 on the server after rebooting my internal NIC becomes invisible (ie my internal IP has disappeared). When I uninstall 5.22 and re-install 5.02 my internal IP is visible again and all works fine.

I have meanwhile upgraded my server from W2k Adv Server with SP3 to Server 2003 Corp. and the same situation happens again. With 5.02 all works fine (although ENS does not install despite a tick in installation process) and with 5.22 my internal IP becomes invisible and none of my server applications work ...

So I believe there is something in ver 5.22 which causes this error. Any clue?

Just fyi here is what is installed on my server:

2 network cards installed. One for the internal connections (Netgear FA311 PCI Network card)
Protocols: client for MS networks, file & printer sharing, TCP/IP
TCP/IP settings: static IP 192.168.58.112 subnet 255.255.255.0

one for external connections (Realtek RTL8139A PCI Network card)
Protocols: client for MS networks, PPPOE
PPPOE settings: Limit TCP MSS = on, Override MTU = off, Number of Lines (WAN) endpoints = 1

Card one (Netgear) is for internal connections and card 2 (Realtek) is for DSL PPPOE dial-up to the internet.

We're still trying to repro it in the test lab. I'll confirm Monday what the status is.

Another with others PC' with the same problem

Postby martinsoft » Jan 11 04 4:59 pm

Hi people!!
I've got the same problems. The only difference is that PC's are working with Windows Me. IP's are 198.162.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0 in server and 198.162.0.5, subnet 255.255.255.0 in terminal. Internet applications doesn't work, but I can ping between both of them and everything work fine. I can broadcast too. I was working with Wingate 5.0.2 and always was working fine, but before upgrade the Wingate... everything was wrong.
It's strange, but in terminal PC, in Wingate Applet, I can see the Wingate server (198.162.0.1 2080). In server, WIngate Engine, the Network view, I can see the other PC (198.162.0.5) and I can broadcast too.
I hope this help you....
after Pascal... help us... please....
....
Sorry about my english....
Bye....

A quick thought ... can you (For a test) set the WinGate service to be "Manual Start" in the Service Control Manager. Reboot the PC and start the WinGate Server manually. Then check if your internal IP is visible. Let me know then, please. If it is not, then you can switch it back to automatic start.

I'll give it a try this eve (I have to install ver 5.22 and if it doesn't work uninstall same and re-install 5.02 which I can't do during office hours..). I'll let you know the outcome later today.

Hi Pascal,

I have nailed down the problem to the ENS driver. Here is what happens:

a) I install ver 5.2.2 with the ENS option ticked but VPN and mailserver option unticked (using MDaemon as a mailserver). After restart my network cards are invisible to any application hence no connection to/from our LAN as well as no connection to the Internet is possible

b) I unload the ENS driver (thru Gatekeeper ENS options) and restart the server and suddenly all network cards are visible again.

c) when I reload/enable ENS driver again after restart network cards become invisible again

So how to tackle with this? Would you like to have a copy of the Wingate config report or want me to try the debug mode? Appreciate your feedback.

Hi, Oliver

Can you turn on debug mode for ENS and see what kind of log messages it generates?

Hi Genie,

sorry for being silent for some time. Have turned on the debug mode but there is no ENS log, only a NAT log. Is that what you're interested in? It shows the following:

By the way I have updated to the latest version (5.2.3) but problem remains. When I load the ENS driver upon system start all my internal IP numbers become invisible and once I disable ENS driver upon system start all works fine ...

Tell me what other info you want. Oh and by the way the problem could not be related to Visnetic Firewall which is also running on the server?

Me again! I have tried various options:

a) installed latest driver of my Realtek card
b) de-activated my Visnetic firewall
c) restarted Win 2003 server

Wingate and ENS driver load fine (no error messages in the NAT log) however all my IP numbers (except for the loopback interface 127.0.0.1) and hence my interfaces are invisible and my network is not running! Likewise none of my Wingate services (www-proxy, socks-proxy, etc) work and are bound to any interface except for the loopback adapter.

When I unload ENS driver and restart my IP's and interfaces are visible again all works fine again.

So, any solution? Or should I better change to Winproxy or Winroute?

Just a sugestion, in case you don't have tried:

1) Don't Upgrade. Take a note of your actual config, uninstall, reboot and make a clean install. See if the default config gave the same problem.

2) Have you tried to change the NICS? I have found that some hardware is not compatible, or at least misconfigured when installed. (TX/RX settings, something like that).

And don't expect a fast response from qbik: seem to be that they have a lot of work to see this "little problems". :)

Regards.

1) Clean install already tried as mentioned in an earlier post ...

2) Nope cause I don't have NICS from various manufacturers lying around ... However changed to latest drivers ...

3) Yep, lesson learned. It's about 6 weeks since they last shown any sign of being alive ...

Hi, Oliver

Sorry for keeping you waiting - I was on vacation for a while.
Can you update the NIC driver to the latest one? If it does not solve the problem, drop me an email - I'll send you the new driver for testing.

Holy Moly - Genie's back! Hope you had a great vacation. See my posting 3d March. I had updated the drivers of both my NIC's to the latest ones available. Since then no new drivers are available from the manufacturers of my NIC's. I don't quite understand what driver you want to send me?

How can I reach you by mail?
