How to handle multiple internet connections

Postby nathanh » May 05 04 5:32 am

Running Wingate 5.2.3 with a cable modem on Win2000. As we are running credit card authorization over IP, we need redundancy, so have installed 3rd network card with a DSL modem coming into it. Each connection works fine, as long as the other is off. With both connections up nothing works (although I can still access the internet on the Wingate server). How do I configure Wingate to use both connections, so if one internet service fails, the other will automatically kick in / continue working?

Second to this, our SMTP service can only go out on the Cable, so if I solve the first question, how do I force SMTP to only use the Cable connection?

Thanks for the help !

Hi,

You should be able to choose connections will be made out on any interface in the WWW proxy server. Are both external connections on different subnets? If not then there could be some routing issues which might be causing you problems.

Similarly you can choose connections to be made out on the following interface only for the SMTP server and select your cable modem interface. Now all connections should go out through the cable modem.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the reply. Both connection are on different subnets. It is set that Connections out will be made on any interface, and both IP's show up in the list, I can browse on the PC hosting Wingate, but any remote PC can not use the web. What about a dual WAN router like the Xincom - XC-DPG502 which has load balancing. Anyone have any experience with that?

Thanks,

Nathan

What IP address range are you using on your LAN? If you go to options>advanced and select the network interfaces tab can you verify that your internal NIC is set to public no trusted yes.

Can you ping the server from a client? If yes, can you ping an internet address from a client? What do you see on the activity screen when you try this? Have you set the default gateway on the client to the internal IP address of the WinGate server?

What IP address range are you using on your LAN?

Using 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.250

If you go to options>advanced and select the network interfaces tab can you verify that your internal NIC is set to public no trusted yes.

The two internal NIC's that connect to the internet are set to 'public no trusted yes'

Can you ping the server from a client?

Yes

can you ping an internet address from a client?

No

What do you see on the activity screen when you try this?

On my PC, which gets its IP assigned by the proxy, I see it trying to route the request, IE. 192.168.0.4 (-) 111.111.111.111

Have you set the default gateway on the client to the internal IP address of the WinGate server?

Yes. As mentioned, each connection works serperatly, but when both internet connections are active it does not work. In WinGate I can see it making the requests for a website, but it quickly dissappears and I get "The page cannot be displayed" in IE6.

Thanks,

Nathan

Hi. Did you find a solution? I have a similar dilemma. I want all programs except one to go through cable, the other through dsl.

Are you running WinGate 6.x?

WinGate 5.2.3 didn't have that great gateway specification. You couldn't for instance choose between multiple gateways accessed via the same network interface.
