WinGate FTP protocol incompatibility

Postby Dvorkin » May 15 04 8:50 am

Hello!

I'm using Pure-FTPd FTP server for my hosting clients.
One of my clients use the WinGate 5.x.x and found some strange things:
1) when they are using HTTP proxy while downloading binary files into my server, the files corrupts during the transfer. They are exactly using binary and passive transfer mode;
2) when they are using transparent FTP proxy to my FTP server, they simply can't connect. After the connect my FTP server usually respond with:
220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd ----------
220-You are user number 1 of 50 allowed.
220-Local time is now 15:42. Server port: 21.
220-This is a private system - No anonymous login
220 You will be disconnected after 15 minutes of inactivity.
, but WinGate can't understand "220-" format of the messages (it is the RFC-compilant format for the multiple-lines messages in FTP protocol). It stops and can't send username to my FTP server.

My FTP server is great. It is full RFC-compilant. It is very secure. I won't change it.
Can you correct the problem?

Hi,

What particular problem your FTP server had with this 220 reply? Wingate FTP proxy is RFC-compliant and we did not have many problems reported about not handling replies correctly. Can you be a bit more detailed about the problem you encountered?

"220 WinGate Engine FTP Gateway ready

Failed SSL/TLS negotiation, disconnected
Connection failed (Connection lost)"

hmmmm, I never saw an AUTH command in RFC 791... did FTP get a breath of new life and TLS support?

We support TLS for POP3, and SMTP... should be easy enough for FTP if there is an RFC for it.

hehe. TLS was been available for a very long time, and is covered in
RFC-2246 and and the extensions to the FTP protocol are defined by RFC-2228.

almost all ftp clients support TLS/SSL (flashfxp, cuteftp, smartftp, pftp)
and many ftpd's support it.

would be nice to have it in v6.0 of wingate, there are the rfc's :)

hmm.. while you're at it, also browse through

* RFC 2389 (Feature negotiation mechanism for the File Transfer Protocol)
* RFC 2428 (FTP Extensions for IPv6 and NATs)

Hi

thanks for the RFC's.. I'll have a look.

Also I am interested in the problem you are having with people using FTP through a HTTP proxy. In this case, we always use PASV mode. Is that likely to be a problem?

I haven't tested HTTP PUT for FTP via the WWW Proxy lately... sounds ugly!
