Sharing Cable connection with Dyanmic IP address

Postby Ethann » May 26 04 12:04 pm

Hi,

I used to use Wingate 4.1.1 to share a Cable connection (with fixed IP from isp). This worked like a charm.

Now I am moving to a place where there is Optus Cable internet, where the IP address is dynamically assigned by the ISP.

My question is whether or not I can use Wingate 4.1.1 (or upgrade to a later version) to share this connection. How can Wingate bind to the dynamic address, or more importantly, how do I set this in the Interfaces section for each proxy service. At the moment they are set to only allow outbound traffic on a specific IP address. I imagine this would work in the with the new ISP until the ISP assigns a new IP address and then all services would stop working. ??

I notice that when sharing dial-up connections you can select the name of the connection rather than having to select a NIC IP address. Can you do this sort of sharing for NIC cards in later later versions of Wingate ? eg specify a NIC rather than an IP address.

I hope I have made myself clear. Thanks for any help you can provide.

In the Interfaces tab you can indeed set a specific interface, be it a NIC or a dial up connection. However we (currently) do bind to IP's instead of an 'adapter' (something that we're looking at changing), so that if the IP WinGate would need to be restarted to see the IP. Having said that the default option 'Connections out will be made on any interface' should always chose the right connection even if the IP does change, as we'll ask the OS which way to go out.

Regards
