Reinstalling Wingate

Postby Niallc » Jun 11 04 11:17 pm

The box on which our WinGate Server was hosted died last week. As a result I have had to reinstall everything (including WinGate).

We have a very unique setup where we have 2 gateways.

Gateway 1: is used for corporate email and other in-house applications. We also have a corporate DNS again for applications. The Windows 95/98 clients are provided with the gateway 1 and dns server addresses by way of DHCP. These cannot be changed so that is why we needed a separate gateway (Gateway 2) for web browsing/FTP etc..

Gateway 2: This is a adsl firewall router. We have pointed the Wingate machine (Windows NT SP6.A) to this, give the Wingate machine the firewall router as the gateway and the ISP DNS settings as the DNS of that machine. We were using the Wingate Server as a proxy server for the win 95/98 clients because they were receiving their default gateway (gateway1) and DNS settings from a DHCP server on the network. Once the proxy had been setup then all we did was point the win 95/98 client web browsers to that machine and it worked very well.

The problem I have is that I can't remember exactly how I setup the wingate (it was so long ago). Now when I tried to do a clean install the win 98/95 clients make a request through their browser to the Wingate machine, the wingate machine recognises their request as http:// and denies authorisation. I know this is a DNS issue and I did try to setup a UDP DNS Mapping service to the ISP but that didn't seem to work either.
After i did this and closed down the gatekeeper, I am no longer able to login to the gatekeeper, i get a 'connection with Wingate Server terminated' error message and then it just throws me out.

Would be grateful if anyone could help. I hope I have explained our situation clearly....it is a little bit unique i'm afraid!.

One last thought. I do have a full backup of the old Wingate default directory. I know with a few applications it is possible to do a refresh install and then copy over the old default directory and overwrite the newer files. This usually doesn't work because most application installations make changes to the registry but sometimes you can fluke it. Is there one particular configuration file that holds the service/system settings of the old installation that maybe i can copy into the newer installation?.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Update

Hi Everyone,
Just to let you know. I finally got the wingate to act as a proxy on the Win NT machine. For some reason the WINS/DNS resolver wasn't working properly. I did a clean reinstallation with the older version of Wingate 5.0 and it worked fine. I'm going to try the newer version of Wingate on another machine to see if i can replicate the problem. I'll let you know how i get on.

Rgds,
Niall
