AOL modem dialup + 2 PC's WINXP but not working. nOOb here..

Postby Deo » Jun 12 04 4:52 am

Just tried out WinGate last night and though I seem to be making progress figuring things out I cannot get a simple set-up going..

Wingate server:
Ip: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Wingate client:
Ip: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

The wingate client did detect the wingate server when installing and it shows up correctly in the dialog when I run it as showing the Wingate client.

My LAN works perfectly and I have enabled the AOL Dialer and my WinGate server can browse the internet fine.. most of the time.. some time it just dies and when I try and re-dial, IE doesn't work and I have to restart my CPU as shutting down wingate and re-starting doesn't work.

My Wingate client IE works to some extent.. it sends DNS requests that show up in gatekeeper and it can load pages that have already been loaded on the Wingate Server.. I had both machines working at one point where they were both surfing different pages, but now that doesn't work! and i didn't even change any settings.

I get no firewall warnings.
Network tab shows both computers listed.
Activity just shows the Wingate Server.
History tab shows a bunch of requests from the Wingate client computer.

Example:

192.168.0.2 http://www.google.com 0 secs 255 bytes 32 bytes
192.168.0.2 IEXPLORER.EXE WRP Control Session -IEXPLORER.EXE
192.168.0.2 http://black/
192.168.0.2 http://www.nba.com
192.168.0.2 DNS: A lookup "downloads.yahoo.com"

Black above refers to the name of the Wingate server PC..

Can anyone diagnose my problem? nOOb here in need of help...

Um.. I fixed my problem, but to do so I had to increase the range of max UDP port #... the firewall was denying access to my client PC on ports up in the 8000's and one up near 25000.. i don't know what this means as I'm not knowledgeable on this stuff... but i made the max UDP port 26000 and now everything works.. however, is this a good idea? or am i leaving my computers open to outside stuff?!?

max previously was 4096 for UDP..

still getting some TCP port blockages.. what should i do?

Hi,

Excuse me, may I know what version of AOL you are using ?
and are you using dialup??

I am also trying to use wingate 5.2.3 with AOL 7 and I get problem with using only one server machine.
When I haven't install wingate, I can connect to the internet using AOL alone. But, after I install wingate, I even cannot connent to the internet...
it gave me the error which is "TCP connection cannot established".
Then I have to uninstall the wingate and AOL then reinstall the AOL only again to connect.

So, can you teach me how to setup the wingate with AOL dial up?

Thanks a lot.
