DNS and WWW proxy error

Postby roesljas » Jun 14 04 3:52 pm

Hello,
i seem to have this problem with my www proxy server on wingate 5.0. 00. "yeah".
Anyway, the basic setup of the gate way PC is two NIC cards, one for ADSL modem and one for internal network.
My www proxy server is bound to the internal NIC (not ADSL). Now,
on the LAN settings for the internal NIC, i have one Default DNS server set.
So with this setup the www proxy service does NOT work,
i need to remove all default DNS servers from the internal LAN properties page.
Then the www works fine,
but this is less then bad, it is useless,
as the server is on a domain, we need Default DNS's specified, and if we don't then domain users cannot login to the server,
also our Exchange 2003 will not work.
All our other server programs are dependent of Default DNS servers.
I think it has somthing to do with Authentication and reaching the domain controller.
I need help pretty quick.

Thankx.

Hi,

It sounds like you're using Active Directory, in which case you'll need to have your clients pointing to the AD DNS server. You should not have the DNS server listed on the internal NIC of the WinGate server, however you'll need to enter your upstream DNS servers on the external NIC of the WinGate server.

If your AD DNS server is on a separate machine to the WinGate server then point your forward lookup zone to the internal NIC of the WinGate server.

If it's on the same machine as the WinGate server make sure that you disable the DNS and DHCP within WinGate. You don't need to specify WinGate as the forward lookup zone in this case.

I've included a link to one of our knowledge base articles that should help you out with setting up WinGate in an Active Directory environment...

ok,
that all made sense,
but how do i point my forward look up zones to the wingate server,
Do i add a host file to the domain located under Forward look up zones?

If you open the DNS properties you can select the forwarder tab, add the IP address of the WinGate server here. You don't need to add a host file.

Let us know how you get on?

www proxy and DNS

No this didn't work.
Perhaps i am doing it wrong.
I open 'DNS' MMC snap in on the primary (only) domain controller, i click on forward lookup zones and it comes up with the following entries
.
paraboller.net.au
The paraboller.net.au is our dns server.
Do i go to the properties of the paraboller.net.au or the "."
There is no direct properties for the forward lookup zone.
