Can't get WinGate to dial dialup account due to other broadb

Postby bradj » Jun 19 04 12:35 pm

UPDATE: OK, I've determined that WinGate isn't dialling because I also have 1-way satellite (dial in for connect & upload, Satellite return via USB receiver). If I disable the Satellite USB device under "LAN & High Speed Connections" then Wingate dials. So, how can I tell Wingate that when my two Unix boxes want to get onto the Internet (see below) it must use the dialup account I have setup, and ignore the "Satellite USB device"? I want to leave the Satellite device there for other uses, and for various technical reasons, the Unix boxes don't work over the satellite connnections (to do the the HTTP version on them and the transparent proxy software used by the ISP) and must use the dialup account.

**ORIGINAL POST**
I have WinXp Pro with a dialup connection to the internet.

I have 2 unix box's on my network which I want to be able to auto-dial onto the internet.

I Added 2 Users "Unix Box 1" & "Unix Box 2". I setup a Group called "Unix Boxes" and added the Users to the Group. The Unix Boxes are not part of any other group.

I setup my dialup connection - tested it by pressing the dial button, Enabled 'Enable this connection to be used by WinGate" and enabled "Connect as required using the connection list". In the dialup service properties I added my 2 Unix Box users.

When my Unix boxes try to get on the Internet, I see the connection pop up on GateKeepers activity screen. It shows the correct User and that they are assumed, and a connection to an IP Address:port80 but WinGate does not perform a dial.

How can I get WinGate to automatically dial for these Unix boxes?

I tried using other variations of Users & groups, but I set it up the way I did because I only want these 2 boxes to auto-dial the Internet, not the rest of my network.

Thanks,
Brad.

Hello,

Try setting up another WWW proxy service on Port 81 or 8080. In policies for this new service only allow group Unix boxes access rights. As well, set the Interfaces tab for this new service so that Connections to be made out on the following interface only is selected to use the dial up account you want. In browser on Unix machines set proxy address to IP of WG machine with port 81 or 8080. Now Unix boxes are forced to use dial up. However, routing will change for other users when this dial up account is being used - they will use it as well even if your satellite connection is active. WG and the OS will only use one route at a time. I don't think there is another way to do this, but come Monday I'm sure someone from Qbik will let you know if there is. Hope this helps.

Chris,

Thanks for your response, but unfortunately my Unix boxes use a legacy application which I can't modify, or configure to use a proxy. They only work in NAT environments.

Brad,

Could you have everyone else use the second proxy service and the Unix Boxes group the standard port 80?
