Strange behaviour Wingate 5.22

Postby ahusic » Jun 22 04 4:49 am

Hello there,

I've tried to gather some information via this forum... but nothing was very close to it.

I am running a W2K Domain with two Servers, 3 Clients on the network and two roadwarriors (Total 5 Clients).

The Server on which Wingate is running has following hardware/software:

- MSI MoBo with AMD XP1800+, 1 GB RAM
- Promise SX4000 RAID Controller, operating in 0/1 mode
- Dlink DGE-550T NIC (connected to LAN)
- Adaptec ANA-62022 NIC (Connected to WAN (Broadband and DSL))
- Running Wingate 5.22

Here's what I am facing:

- Adaptec NIC simply stops working after 30 - 60 minutes, internal segment still up and runnin fine
- NAT can be performed on Server (running Wingate).
- NAT can be performed on other machines just for a very short timeframe (between 5 - 10 minutes)
- PING (IP) from any machine to remote source on the web works at any time
- PING (www.*name*:tld) from any machine to remote source on the web works at any time
- Proxy does not serve any webpage or whatever source
- WGIC does not solve this issue on any client.
- Wingate LOG shows request - but nothing gets displayed on the machine itself
- When connecting via VPN on first connection everything works fine. On second connect all machines on LAN are simply invisible and VPN simply disconnects after 2-3 minutes. To recover the complete service I need to restart the server.

Does anybody here have a clue hwo to fix this - or even more essential - what the route cause could be?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Alexander

Hi Alexander

Sorry for asking a few questions but it might help finding out some of your problems.

I take it if your running Active Directory(AD), since you said you were running a Win2k domain, is this correct or is it a workgroup scenario?
If you are running AD have you read our knowledgebase articles about WinGate setup in the AD. There are several considerations that you need to make in these types of scenarios. You can read the articles here:

http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... ubcat&_i=1

Adaptec NIC simply stops working after 30 - 60 minutes, internal segment still up and runnin fine

Does the NIC stop working completely or just stops communicating with the WinGate server?

NAT can be performed on Server (running Wingate)

If you try and access the internet from the WinGate machine WinGate wont actually influence your Internet access as it hasnt been designed this way. Do you see NAT activity in the activity screen in GateKeeper when you try this?

Have a read of the KB articles as I suggested so we can be sure everything is set right, and let us know how you get on.

Hi Erwin,

thank you for your reply. To get back to your posting:

Why should I mind. I am looking for help. How could you do your best if I don't share my intelligence ;-)

Yes - I do run AD with two servers.

I've followed this but..... was not very succeful and/or lucky.

No the NIC stops more or less completly. Packets go out - but no packets go in. It simply stops working no matter what you do. Only help while or after this happens - restart.

NAT can be performed on Server (running Wingate)

Well - this was not the point. The one and only machine - where I could access the web (or whatever) was the WinGate machine itself. What I found interesting was, that you a) ping ip ore name wise form each attached machine - and got corresponding reply. If you wnated to display a page like www.google.de (or com, or...., or...) it simply "failed". While looking inot the activity log within Wingate, you could see the request from each machine, no errors - but unfortunatly no content in your browser. It seemed as this traffic simply was lost somewhere in my network (nirvana/woodo?)

Have a read of the KB articles as I suggested so we can be sure everything is set right, and let us know how you get on.

Unfortunatly I had to implement a router right now.... I needed my network up and runnin. BUT - I have not abandoned! I'll install exactly the same scenario on a different machine and will let you know if I'll prevail

Thank you for your help.

Cheers & have a good day,
Alexander
