Switching to System Messages spontaneously?

Postby George in Seattle » Jul 13 07 6:22 pm

What is causing the Gatekeeper to switch to System Messages View spontaneously. Aside from being very annoying, I am worried something is not configured right.

It appears to have started when I put a Ban on all IP adresses that start with "58." (anything with 58 as the first byte of the 32 bit address was my intention).

A sample message:
------------------
Object: Authentication
Time: 12-Jul-2007 21:52:46
Message ID: 0301
Description: Authentication failed - user Guest on 58.55.14.203 requested http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media
------------------

The message suggests success, but why is Gatekeeper switching views like that?

Right Click the System Messages windows then find the properties and then uncheck the option shown below. *That will actually disable all Auto-Activation. And if you just uncheck "Authentication warnings" then I believe it will still Auto-Activate although it will not show any of the Authentication Failures - that is a bug.

If you make a policy to ban all ip addresses beginning with 58, then that is why that System Message is being shown; it indicates that someone tried to make a request from that 58 address and it failed.
The changes between version 6.x releases can be reviewed here:

Thanks for that. I suppose I should have been able to find that for myself, but I'm still somewhat unfamiliar with the whole interface.
