DNS - System Names

I have created a new XP Sp3 box with V: 6.6.4
The Lan network is configured as static
192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0
No gateway
DNS points to my W2k8 server running DNS

Wingate shows the IP address of the local clients and not the DNS names.
Any ideas on where I should look?

p.s. This is my first step before upgrading to V7. I want everything working properly first.

Hi

to be honest, I don't think it's that good an idea installing WinGate 6 first when your goal is WinGate 7.

Enough things work differently (and better) that you'll do some work that will be abandoned (like DNS setup), and some that you'd need to redo (like policy).

I'd recommend just installing WinGate 7 straight up, and see if you still have a problem with client computer names.

These computers are on an active directory?

Is there a step by step guide to installing 7?
I did a fresh install and nothing on my lan could gain access to the wan / internet
at least with 6, I could get outside the lan....

anything in terms of firewalling, network adapter usage and service bindings etc is identical to 6.

what errors do you get on the clients? By default WinGate 7 doesn't install DHCP or DNS services any more. What do your clients use for DNS? You may need to add some services.

Will uninstalling V6 work before installing 7?
I have all my DSL Dialup and Dyn IP software working perfect....

If I have to build another new drive, so be it...

Hi

uninstalling v6 first should work fine - and is recommended in this case. Make sure you reboot after the uninstall before installing 7.
