wingate as Server between DSL-Router and Internal LAN

Hello, ich have following problem:

I'm using a local net with a Wingate Server and serveral WIN7 Clients.
This Wingate Server is connected to the internet via DSL Router/Modem.

Following NETwork Configuration:

DSL Modem: DHCP; 10.0.0.138

Server:
Win7 ultimate
IP (LAN): 192.168.0.1
IP (internet): DHCP from Modem; 10.0.0.1
Wingate 6.6.4 1338
Windows Firewall disabled
ICS disabled


WLAN Router:
192.168.0.10
DHCP

Client1:
WIN7 Ultimate
IP (LAN): 192.168.0.2

Client2:
WIN7 Ultimate
IP (LAN): 192.168.0.3

Client3:
Notebook
Win7 Ultimate
IP (WLAN): DHCP


I want to use the proxy of wingate.
But after the Internet -Explorer configuration of the Clients ( internetoptions- Connections- LAN configuration- Proxy-Server: aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd)
i am not able to connect to the internet.


Following Errormessage occurs:

Host not found
name lookup for www.gmx.at failed

if I do not use proxy server in the Internet Explorer, the access to the Internet only works from the server. The clients can not access the internet anyway.

I'm sure it's just a little thing. Please help.

Hi

it looks like WinGate is not able to do DNS lookups. Normally WinGate will use the same DNS configuration that the host computer (that WinGate is running on) is using.

Is this a new installation of WinGate? You may need to manually add a DNS server to use into WinGate's DNS resolver settings.

p.s. make sure there's no default gateway setting on the internal adapter on the WinGate computer.

I recently saw a system (win7) where there was a persistent route configured (showed up in Route Print from command line) but wasn't part of the adapter configuration.

If you can go to command prompt on the WinGate computer, type "route print", and you should only get one entry where the network is 0.0.0.0. If you get 2, there is the problem.

thank you for your answer. There are no default gateways on the wingate server configured.

Hello Adrien,

in the meantime, i Reinstalled wingate. And now there is only one route for 0.0.0.0
i also tried to use DNS/Wins resolver ( 192.168.0.1 and in a second try 10.0.0.1) These are the two adresses my wingate server uses

192.168.0.1 is the fix internal adress
10.0.0.1 is a reserved IP-Adress for the external connection to the DSL-modem

But no effect. The same Problems as before.

from my own experience, when 1st time try wingate 7 (arround november2010, if i not mistaken, that time wingate 7 still in beta)

-fresh install wingate7
-set forced proxy = off
-but client cannot connect to internet, "host not found"
-explore wingate management windows, then I saw DNS Services is not installed.
-manually add DNS Service - (open wingate management -> under control panel, go to Services -> Right click at service window -> install services -> choose DNS -> Binding policy = bind only to 127.0.0.1 on software loopback interface 1 + bind to any ip address in any internal adapter (if i not mistaken this option automatically setup by wingate) -> OK
-try connect to internet at client pc, everything running successfully

thanks fpor your message. But i'm using wingate 6.4.4
The configuration you explain is done also in my casae.
But the clients are not able to connect to the internet.

Maybe it's easier for you, when you see a picture of my network.

Ich have one additional Problem.
The two NICs are both set to "Public".
The internal (192.168.0.1) can not be changed to "home network".

with those IP addresses both being deemed internal, WinGate probably set adapter usage (WinGate Management > Control Panel > Network connections) to "Internal".

You could try setting the one that connects to the DSL to be "external".

I still suspect a routing issue. Also, what DNS servers are showing in the DNS client settings in WinGate management?

Hello Adrien,

thanks for your reply. I changed the status in the Network Tab to external (10.0.0.1)
I also add an DNS-Server to both NIC's.
Reason:

in the commandline i checked with "ipconfig /all" the settings and found, that there was the IP-Adress of the MODEM used as DNS-Server.
So i add 195.58.160.194 as primary and 195.58.161.122 as secondary DNS-Server to both NIC.
Now it works.

No entry in the DNS/Resolver of Wingate.
