New user questions

Postby Daddicus » May 05 13 5:55 pm

I've got Wingate installed and working (I think :)). But, I have a couple of usage questions. First, the background:

My goal with buying Wingate is (or, will be) threefold:

A) Speed up web access a little.
B) Put some content filtering onto my home network. <-- most important to me
C) Monitor what my kids might be accessing. <-- 2nd most important

After reading some stuff and looking over the tools, it appears that Wingate will indeed do the trick. But, if I'm reading correctly, I'll need two things:

A "Pro" license, to allow monitoring, and
A 3rd-party product to establish content filtering rules.

Am I correct in both of those assessments?

Hi

actually you still get a bunch of monitoring with a Standard license. The only thing you don't get is W3C format usage logs. But you still get diagnostic logs (which log requests), and also timeline.

As for content filtering rules. The rules come with all licenses, it's the classification that is the additional product if you're referring to PureSight for WinGate. So you can create your own classifications and manually classify sites with any license, but PureSight comes with a bunch of classifications of sites built in plus what they call Automatic Content Recognition, which is where their ACR engine tries to figure out what category the page is based on the content of the page. The ACR only supports 4 categories, while the other categories are provided by the PureSight list, which is updated periodically.
