DNS Problem

Postby Darko » May 13 13 10:54 pm

Hi Guys,

I am sure that this question has been asked a million times over, but I can't seem to come right with any knowledge base articles or previous posts.

I have managed to install WinGate 7, and configure it with my broadband router.

I have it installed on a machine with 2 network cards. One card is connected to the router, the other is connected to the internal network. I have configured the network adapters in Wingate to Internal / External as well.

Everything seems to work correctly, except when I browse from a client machine to the internet. I get a DNS lookup error.

It obviously can't resolve domain names correctly. I have had a look at my Wingate installation, and DHCP and DNS services installed and running. Everything on the Wingate installation is pretty much default.

My question is, how do I configure the DNS client correctly so that it resolves domain names, or how do I add a different DNS from teh one that is currently there by default?

Hi

Did you install the DNS service into WinGate? We no longer install it by default for a number of reasons. This is required if any client or computer on your LAN wants to use WinGate as a DNS server, which will be the case if you've added the DHCP service in WinGate, with default settings and clients are using DHCP.

To install the DNS service, just go to WinGate > Control Panel > Services, and select the "Install service" task from the tasks panel on the bottom left of the screen.

Are you running an Active Directory? If so, you'll already have a DNS server on your LAN. In this case, the clients should use the AD DNS server for DNS, and it would be normal for the AD DNS server to forward non-local requests to an external server (in the forwarders section of the DNS server configuration). It's common to enter the WinGate server IP as the forwarder.

Hi Adrien.

Yeah, it's all installed. I had to add it after installation. I added DHCP and DNS.

I have read some other threads on here, and I think it could be that my router is on the same IP range and subnet as my internal network?

I am going to try and change that this morning before everyone gets in.

I will reply if it doesn't work with a screen shot of my setup.

Changing the IP range of my internal network fixed the issue.

Thank you very much.
