Cannot login to GateKeeper

Postby authenion » Jul 21 06 3:26 am

I'm evaluating 6.1.4.1099-USE on Windows XP. I have activated an evaluation license. I have tried every conceivable combination I can think of and I always get this message:

----

Problem connecting to server:

There was a problem connecting to the server. Connnection refused by server. Check your server name and port number.

-----

I have tried installing and re-installing, re-booting, numerous times, using both the Windows OS user database and the WinGate user database, using valid accounts on both methods, using the "use current windows login" checkbox, etc. etc. etc. etc. Yes, I've tried it all. Nothing works. I want to BUY this software for the purpose of sharing an Internet connection, but that depends on whether the evaluation is successful... and if I can't log on to the GateKeeper, I'll consider the evaluation unsuccessful and look elsewhere. Please help. I appreciate your assistance.

Welcome to the forums, theres a lot of good help here.

By default, the port should be 808, and server should say localhost.

This is assuming you are not doing this remotely?

Do you have a firewall on your machine that monitors ports, maybe it's blocking the default port.

You didn't set any services to use the same port as gatekeeper did you? If you did, I think you can check windows registry and change it, since you can get into gatekeeper.

Yes, thanks... all is as one would expect... the port is 808 and the server is localhost... and I'm doing this on the local machine.

I am not running a firewall, so that port SHOULD be open, but there are of course ways I can check that port, and I'll do that.

Try putting in the IP address of the local machine instead of "localhost", or 127.0.0.1.

I wonder if the gatekeeper service is disabled somehow if that doesn't work.

I completely uninstalled and re-installed the WinGate application, verifying that my trial licence is active and this time selecting to use the WinGate user database (to rule out anything going on with the OS user database). I tried putting in the IP assigned to the LAN NIC (192.168.0.100), the IP dynamically assigned by the dial-up (from Earthlink.net, 4.238.227.134), good old localhost, also 127.0.0.1, ALWAYS the same result as before (connection refused by server).

I see the tray icon for the GateKeeper, and a mouseover displays "Syslog messages waiting." When I look at the list services in Administrative Tools, I don't see any service that says "WinGate" or "GateKeeper." Should I?

Again, that's Windows XP Pro (NOT with sp2), USRobotics faxmodem connected to the Internet that works fine, and a LinkSys DI-514 router that's only used to connect the 3 computers on my LAN. The idea is that the computers on the LAN will share the connection to the Internet on the modem... but FIRST, I must be able to connect to the GateKeeper!

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Yea, there should be a service called "Qbik Wingate Engine".

You can try copying gatekeeper.exe over to another machine, putting the IP address of the wingate server in there and seeing if it works.
