Bypassing Email and letting pop/smtp work directly?

Postby SeanLR » Jan 22 07 9:06 pm

Hello.

I have several users with email accounts from different hosts.

I would like to bypass the SMTP and POP on wingate and let these people download there mails directly.

How do i go about this as currently several people can not get there email.

Bandwidth is not a problem.

G'day,

Yes have done this method in the past.

    Disable the POP3 / SMTP services in Wingate.
    Set the user to connect directly to their mail host for in / out traffic.

That should be it.

No mail will be scanned by KAV is you use it.

LMK how it goes.

So are there other users who would still be using WG's POP3/SMTP services?

Hi

check that the client can even ping the site they are trying to connect to, or look up its IP.. There could even be a DNS or other issue preventing this from working.

To make sure WinGate mail services doesn't interfere in clients who want to just retrieve their mail from the net, you don't need to disable all mail in WinGate, you just need to make sure it isn't intercepting connections on port 110 or 25. Check in the POP3 proxy, the POP3 server and the SMTP server and proxies in Wingate for this.

What connection methods are you using?

If you are using NAT, then should be a default gateway specified on the LAN Clients, and it should be set to the internal ip address of the WinGate server. You should also have the Extended Networking Service installed, and NAT enabled within it. To test for the NAT connection method from a LAN Client, you would do the following commands; the first is to check for DNS connectivity and the second is the check for gateway connectivity. Check it against WinGate and Google.

(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ping www.wingate.com(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ping 210.55.214.36

(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ping www.google.com
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ping 66.102.7.147

If you are using the WGIC, then the above test will only resolve the domain name. To test for complete WGIC connectivity then remove the proxy server from the LAN Clients web browser then open up a some web pages..

If you are still having problems, then check for any authentication issues in GateKeepers System Messages tab
GateKeeper --> View menu --> System Messages.

I presume that if you have any other security suites installed on the WinGate server that you have checked the logs and alerts for any potential issue. I also presume that the Windows Firewall and ICS is disabled in the Windows Services.

If you are still having problems, please send in the following information to the helpdesk so we can help you track down this issue.

http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=tickets&_m=submit

1. WinGate Registry.
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Registry

2. WinGate Config Report
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Config Report

3. ipconfig/all from one LAN Client, and the WinGate Server
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all >> C:\ipa.txt

one other thing to check.

Your LAN IP is a public IP (i.e. is used on the internet) rather than a private one. That means by default WinGate will think your LAN adapter is an external one, and not bind services to it. It will also not NAT through from an external interface.

So you need to verify the adapter usage setting in wingate for your LAN adapter. It needs to be "internal" on the network tab in gatekeeper.
