Wingate 6.1

Postby tristar449 » Mar 27 07 9:22 am

Need some help - Just installed wingate 6.1 on the W2K Server dual NIC Cards. My Internet connection from inside of the network keeps dropping every couple minutes. Also, my users which come in and are re-directed to the Internal servers get dropped.

has anyone encountered problems with the Wingate and how do you fix it?

Thanks
John

Just installed wingate 6.1 on the W2K Server dual NIC Cards

--> The latest version of WinGate is 6.2.1
http://downloads.qbik.com/qbiknz2/downl ... 33-USE.EXE

My Internet connection from inside of the network keeps dropping every couple minutes

--> Confirm it is not a DNS issue - next time you have no connectivity on a LAN Client, test with an ip address. e.g. ping 66.102.7.99 (google.com)

Here are two possible test solution based on the limited information you have provided:
a) If WinGate is the DNS Server for the LAN Clients, then add your ISP's/Routers DNS Server ip addresses into GateKeeper --> DNS/WINS Resolver --> DNS.
b) If you are in an Active Directory environment then the AD DNS Server will be the LAN Clients DNS Server - a Microsoft requirement. Confirm that it is forwarding to a DNS Server that resolve domain names - if it is forwarding to WinGate’s DNS Server, then you need to set in WinGate to never send the request back to the AD DNS Server (to avoid looping); that option can be found via (Windows) Start menu --> Programs --> WinGate --> Advanced Options --> DNS.

Also, my users which come in and are re-directed to the Internal servers get dropped

My interpretation: Remote Internet Clients cannot connect to LAN Servers via WinGate.
--> A few possible issues:
a) Confirm your network cards are correctly marked as External/Internal.
b) Confirm that your ENS Port Redirections have the option "Don't translate source ip" checked.
c) Confirm there are no firewalls on the LAN Servers that are blocking the connections.
d) Confirm the LAN Servers are setup for the NAT connection method.
e) If you do not need RRAS, disable it for the sake of testing.
f) Confirm there are no authentication errors in Gatekeepers System Messages tab - Internet Clients will connect in as the Guest user unless you have configured a way for them to authenticate.
g) Confirm the TCP/IP and Routing is correct on both network cards on WinGate server.

James -

I have checked all of the items you suggested and all looks good.

I am looking into the http logs and I am seeing following Error:

Error: Caught socket exception in CWWWSession::HTTPProcessRequest () Connection to Remote Host timed out - terminating.

System is still having problems and I not sure what's causing it.

Any other testing I can do? IS there a way you can sign on to the system to checkout the settings?

Thanks
John

Hi John,

Thanks for the details. I presume that this test did not allow connectivity:
Confirm it is not a DNS issue - next time you have no connectivity on a LAN Client, test with an ip address. e.g. ping 66.102.7.99 (google.com)

Any other testing I can do? IS there a way you can sign on to the system to checkout the settings?

a) Can you confirm that there is no Gateway being added to your Route table for the internal adapter? If there is, you may need to disable the RIP2 Listener in WinGate.
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> route print
http://forums.qbik.com/images/posts/vpn ... stener.GIF

b) Turn on Debug logging in the WWW Proxy Server, recreate the error, then review an extra information that is written to the WWW Proxy Log file.

c) I presume Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is disable in the Windows 2000 Services.

d) Confirm (if possible) that it is not a network card or cable error. If you have a Realtek 8029 network card, then there is an option for this available via (Windows) Start menu --> Programs --> WinGate --> Advanced Options --> Hardware Speicific.
*And to check if you have a Realtek 8029, just do an ipconfig/all and look at the description field.

e) I think a discovery of your settings will be the next step, can you create a support ticket and send in the following details?
http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=tickets&_m=submit

1. WinGate Registry.
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Registry

2. WinGate Config Report
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Config Report

3. ipconfig/all from one LAN Client, and the WinGate Server
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all >> C:\ipa.txt

Also let us know if you have any other security / networking suites installed on the WinGate server, and confirm that you have checked their logs and alerts for any potential issues.
