Though Windows 7 is far superior to previous operating systems in many regards, the power saving sleep/hibernation modes have issues. Sleep mode turns off peripherial devices while saving the state of open applications. Hibernation takes a snapshot of what's open (what's in RAM) and writes it to the HD before turning everything off. The issue is restoring everything exactly to where it was when things come back on.
When a system goes into hibernation, sometimes it hangs when some devices shut down, and others don't. Did you go through the steps provided in the link I sent you above? It shows you how to determine what device is keeping things from going to sleep, and how to stop that from happening. The problem you're having is not with Wingate, but how Windows interfaces with the hardware. Remember, applications like Wingate simply ride on top of the operating system. Unlike the old days, Windows today does not allow applications to interface directly with the hardware. It uses a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to be the intermediary between the application and the hardware.
Though not convenient, you may need to have the developers power down their laptops if they will be away for a long time, or simply turn off the sleep/hibernation settings entirely.
