Vista Laptop locks up on sleep with Wingate VPN Installed

Postby clarionite » Feb 11 11 3:20 pm

My Vista 32bit laptop locks when Wingate VPN is installed and it attempts to be put into sleep mode.
Any suggestions other than not using sleep mode? I've uninstalled and not used the software for over a
year because of this issue. I need to find a fix for this.

Sleep mode is controlled by the O/S, not the application. Doing a search of sleep mode issues with Vista or Windows 7 will provide a wealth of information. Sleep/hibernation issues with XP were even worse. Most of us had problems with the NIC not "waking back up" after sleeping, so we just disabled the option entirely.

I never used Vista, but went right to Windows 7. Driver support is excellent, and it is very stable. I believe a good bit of this problem is likely related to the hardware and driver support for the O/S you're using. I think you'll find the options for the command line "powercfg" will end up helping your problem. First, ensure your drivers are the latest available. After that, go after the devices that are able to "wake up" the O/S, which "powercfg" can modify. Good hunting!

Rick,

I appreciate you taking the time to reply, but this is related to Wingate. When the software is removed, there is no problem. When I install the program, it locks every time. It doesn't matter if I'm connected or not, or if I've stopped the service or not. If the software isn't there, it works perfectly.
I don't deny that there may be a setting that can be modified in the OS that would help, but I have no idea what that setting is. And since the problem is related to this software being installed I'm hoping this software vendor can help me resolve this issue. My company likes the software, and I'd really like to be able to use it, instead of having to use something different than everyone else in the company, as I've done for over a year hoping this issue would be resolved. I'm willing to send what ever logs they need to help me solve this issue.

Understand completely. The issue still comes down to how the hardware interacts with Windows. The fact that the VPN driver is attached to the NIC simply causes the issue to surface. Please take a look at the powercfg command line syntax. I found the following link very helpful:

http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows ... not-sleep/

When I researched a problem with one of my PC's not sleeping, I found that a sound card was keeping things from working. It was not the application software doing it per se, but how the hardware was communicating to Windows while the software was loaded. The symptoms can be no sleep, hangs, or the like. After I took the sound card out of the -devicedisablewake and rebooted, the problem went away.

Of course, I defer to the folks at Qbik for another angle on this. Regardless, I would check out that link for sure to see if it might help you.

Rick,

I appreciate the link. I'll see if that helps. If so I'll post the solution back here.
I noticed where you were from, and had to look twice because I thought it was my
info, but I couldn't remember putting that in the profile. It appears we live in the same
town.

How neat is that?! I live close to Sisterdale. Though I office out of my home, I end up going to San Antonio about 4-5 days a week.

Larry, you're too funny! Must be that cold air affecting your brain! Boerne is not unlike Fairfax was when I lived there in the late 60's. Dad traveled to the Pentagon daily. I travel to San Antonio. Similar distance, but I face way less traffic!

You wouldn't recognize Fairfax now then. There is very little difference between living there and being downtown DC. Congestion, congestion, congestion.

Update: I purchased a new laptop yesterday. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Intel i3 processor. Same problem as the old laptop and windows vista. The machine won't recover from a hibernate. Doesn't look as if it ever truly hibernates. I think it locks when it attempts. I have to hard boot the machine.

3 of the developers at my office are unable to connect to our VPN with their laptops because of issues like this. Can we please get some assistance in solving this issue? It's been going on for over a year now, and I'm not getting anywhere.

Though Windows 7 is far superior to previous operating systems in many regards, the power saving sleep/hibernation modes have issues. Sleep mode turns off peripherial devices while saving the state of open applications. Hibernation takes a snapshot of what's open (what's in RAM) and writes it to the HD before turning everything off. The issue is restoring everything exactly to where it was when things come back on.

When a system goes into hibernation, sometimes it hangs when some devices shut down, and others don't. Did you go through the steps provided in the link I sent you above? It shows you how to determine what device is keeping things from going to sleep, and how to stop that from happening. The problem you're having is not with Wingate, but how Windows interfaces with the hardware. Remember, applications like Wingate simply ride on top of the operating system. Unlike the old days, Windows today does not allow applications to interface directly with the hardware. It uses a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to be the intermediary between the application and the hardware.

Though not convenient, you may need to have the developers power down their laptops if they will be away for a long time, or simply turn off the sleep/hibernation settings entirely.

Rick,

I've gone through the steps, and there are no devices listed. So there should be no issues with that.
And while I understand your point that the OS controls going into hibernation, the issue is that Wingate VPN is
the software that's not playing nice on the OS. It's the one piece of software that we've had issues with over
multiple machines and multiple operating systems. When it works WIngate VPN is fantastic. It does what we
want. But its frustrating that I'm getting no response from Qbik on this issue. And turning off the power management
on laptops isn't the solution. I do appreciate your suggestions and your willingness to help.
