Outlook Express and WinGate Problems

Postby perep » Dec 06 03 7:39 am

I'm trying to use Microsoft Outlook Express from some PC's on the network. They have the wingate client installed and Internet Explorer works fine, no problem.

But when I try to read or send e-mail using OE it gives me errors, OE never find the pop or smtp server of my ISP.

I've make a standard WinGate installation (version 5.0) without mail server and without pop3 sevice enabled (I've tryied with POP3 services enabled too).

OE works fine in the server machine, which connects to internet trhow a cable modem.

I've tryied to define a TCP port mapping to for port 110, but I get the same error.

Any Idea?

HELP!!!!

We have found that we're still getting some problems running email when the AntiVirus plug-in is installed, do you have AV?

Also, I would recommend upgrading to version 5.2 as we fixed several issues that the earlier versions were experiencing.

Do you have IE configured to use a proxy? It sounds like DNS is not working properly, how are the TCP/IP properties on your client machines configured. Do you use WinGate's DHCP service for this or are you manually configuring this.

For clients to be able to use DNS, they will need to have their DNS configuration point to a valid DNS server. This would normally be the IP address of your WinGate server, but if you are running another server, you may need to use that instead.

I may have had a very similar problem.

I originally had Wingate 4.11 working fine until it started dialing when a new application was installed. I installed all 5.x versions and it wouldn't work. The latest I have is 5.22 and it is working!

The server is 192.168.0.1 and I have 192.168.0.2 as client but I've set it up as NAT -- WGIC will not work. It used to be that I could specify WINGATE as my POP and SMTP servers and have a proxy on the server. Not so anymore, I do have a POP3 service setup as 8110 because 192.168.0.1 (WS1) uses Norton as it's POP server. I also setup SMTP service as 8025. Both 8110 and 8025 direct to the real ISP servers and at the client (WS2) OE mail server settings I specified WS1.

I hope this is understandable, if anyone wants more info, just post or mail me.

Cheers!

I'm have problem too. Outlook Express from client computer cannot send email . Receive is OK. If install WGIC on client , it will send OK. Wingate 5.1 no have this problem

Problem is when sending email in Outlook Express if using NAT

The progress bar of sending mail run to a hafl or under 50 % it will stop for long time and show error message

On Gate Keeper show status of sending mail client IP try to connect to mail server on port 25

Such problem not happen when WGIC installed on Client but I don't like to use WGIC

Firewall is disable
SMTP server is stop
POP server is stop
I don't use Wingate email server but when reinstall Wingate server with option install email server , problem same

Wingate server ver 5.2.2 . Windows XP Professional , Static IP for client 192.168.0.xxx . Server IP 192.168.0.1 . All thing work well . Only OE cannot send mail :-)

Any one can help me

Hungquoc,

The reason you will still be able to use Internet and email ok from the server is because WinGate does not control generated activity from the local machine (itself)(unless configured to do so)

Have you read the WinGate helpfile regarding setting up email in WinGate?
There are several scenarios outlined however these are explained in further detail in our knowledge base on how to get email configured correctly with WinGate.

Hope these help

Hey Erwin,

I'm still a bit confused.

I read the help and checked the knowledge base URL you posted, like I said in my post http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?p=3764#3764 I had to use the network name to get access to the additional POP and SMTP services I setup as 8025 and 8110 to get OE to work from the client machine, Norton binds itself to port 110 on the server machine (192.168.0.1) and that prevents the client (192.168.0.2) access to the outside. I have the the Gateway tab set on the client pointing to the server machine (192.168.0.1) to get IE access (I understand I'm avoiding WGIC services this way and going NAT) but otherwise IE wouldn't work either.

So although (knock on wood) my network is now working I don't really understand how or why.

Cheers!
