SMTP Remote: Message 003932 not sent, no recipients accepted

Postby salimwng » Mar 03 04 9:48 am

Since the beginning of this week, some ( i repeat....some ) of our email is returning back to the respective users. ( please see at the bottom of the post, the complete error message wingate is giving ). We are using Wingate for Internet Connection Sharing only, we are not making use of the proxy service.

The message " Your message has been refused because your mail server [202.123.14.89] is blacklisted by list.dsbl.org, please contact your ISP or system administrator. " is very scary. We have contacted our Internet Service Provider and the latter told us that the problem comes from us. I am completely confused now....

I checked at all the services and everything works fine. In the email tab of Gatekeeper, we have selected that email is " Delivered Directly", and as mentioned above, automatic checking of email is configured at the Client side. Wingate is configured ONLY for allowing the user to get access to the net !

Please urgently try to help us, IMPORTANT emails are being returned.

Please see the DETAIL message below. For your information, we are using the latest version of Wingate, Kaspersky Antivirus addin and Puresight addin. For Internet connection, we use ADSL 512 K.

----------------------------------------------
A transcript of the session follows
----------------------------------------------

* Beginning processing of domain intnet.mu
* Domain MX record lookup succeeded
* Attempting connection to mail.servihoo.mu.<= 220 servihoo.mu ESMTP CommuniGate Pro 4.1.8. It is you again :-( succeeded => HELO awserver.intnet.mu <= 250 servihoo.mu we trust you awserver.intnet.mu => MAIL FROM:<amwy@bow.intnet.mu> <= 250 amwy@bow.intnet.mu sender accepted => RCPT TO:<cover.age@intnet.mu> <= 591 Your message has been refused because your mail server [202.123.14.89] is blacklisted by list.dsbl.org, please contact your ISP or system administrator.

Awaiting your PROMPT reply,

Thank you & kind regards.

So are you using WinGate mail? You say you are only using the internet sharing but then mention that you have set the email properties to 'Deliver Directly'. These options are only used if you are utilising WinGate mail. So how do you have your clients set up?! Do they have their SMTP and POP settings pointing at WinGate's internal IP? Or do they point directly to your ISP's mail server? Or do you run another mail server on your network (such as Exchange etc)? If you are not using WinGate mail then you do not need the SMTP server started. How is this configured at the moment?

Hello Neil,

Thanks for replying.

Our clients are setup so that the POP3 and SMTP point directly to the ISP Mail server. We do not have another mail server on the network and we are NOT using Exchange neither.

But it's true that we have the check box 'checked' in the Mail Properties. We also have the 'check' in the "Keep copies of Mail sent" and i have noticed that the folder of Wingate/Mail/...../spool/sent contains hundreds of MSG files, which is something normal.

The clients are configured in such way that they themselves perform automatic checking every X mins ( Email Client is Outlook 2000 ). In the confuration tab for Internet Email we are making use of the hash "#" delimeter for the incoming Mail server, and this hash sign is also configured somewhere on Wingate.

Is there any file in Wingate folder or sub folder that i can send to you ( i need your email address though ) so that once you look at it you can understand how our Wingate is configured ! Something like an INI file or text readable ????

Please let me know,

Any further information needed, please let me know.

Many thanks

If your LAN clients point at your ISP's mail server then i would suggest 'stopping' the SMTP server via GateKeeper, as it sounds like WinGate mail is running, even though you dont really need it.

In GateKeeper, if you go to the Menu Option - Advanced, and under the trouble shooting tab click 'Save Report', you can send that to me (neil @ qbik), which will contain your configuration for me to look at.

Hi There in MAURITUS,

I love astronomy - especially "black holes". You seem to have got yourself into one. I know, because last year, I had the same problem and it took a couple of weeks to understand what was going on.

So here is what I know and hope that it helps.

The solution to your problem is in your first message. If you go to the following link: http://dsbl.org/main (remember your message: "Your message has been refused because your mail server [202.123.14.89] is blacklisted by list.dsbl.org". Now go to the link on this page: "Is my IP listed by DSBL?" Enter your IP Address 202.123.14.89 and you should see the following:

*************************************************************
DSBL: Listing Data
If you're not sure why you were referred to this webpage, please read this page first.
Status
IP: 202.123.14.89
State: Listed
Listed in unconfirmed (unconfirmed.dsbl.org): yes
Listed in singlehop (list.dsbl.org): yes
Listed in multihop (multihop.dsbl.org): no
Record last changed: 2003/Dec/23 03:36:48 UTC
Server identifies itself as: hh
Reverse DNS identifies server as: R14-89.intnet.mu

There is a lot of useful information in the above message that you can take it to your IP and I am sure that you will know more about the problem than they do. This is important as you can then intimidate them into doing their job and not blaming it on others.

Note also the date. It seems that this address started causing problem back around Christmas last year. Not sure when you started having problems, but there is your time reference.

What does all this mean? It means that your IP Address has been gobbledup by a "black hole" in Cyber Space.

Why? Well, your IP address is used by all your neigbours there in Mauritus and some of them are apparently not very nice types. They either are spamming useless advertising or spreading virus attacks or other nasty things all over the Internet. After awhile, the roving black holes catch up with them and then, all of us, using the same connection as them, get swallowed up as well.

What to do? On the same page as above, go to the link: "Please remove my IP." and then pray. Hopefully someone will take note of your plea and release the IP address from the clutches of the monster.

Problem is: It could happen again and you need to advise, insist or beatup (in that order) your IP to make sure they monitor traffic on this address and findout who is causing you and other a major pain in the butt.

IP's never take the blame for anything they just want your money.

From what you are saying in terms of some messages are Ok and others not, it could be that your IP has a dynamic connection to you and as a result, sometimes you hit the IP address that is being blocked and sometimes not. If you use: http://www.whatismyip.com/ from your machine connected to the Internet, and the address changes from time to time, then you know you have a dynamic connection.

Boy do I love astronomy. Particularly black holes. Ask Tim at Qbik all about it. I bugged him for many days, thinking that it was Wingate that was the problem, when it wasn't. Only problem was, I somehow also stumbled into the Qbik Black Hole, but my buddy Tim came and rescued me. Now that's another story.

Last point. There are a number of these "sinister servers" out there (even WinGate uses a small local one) If you still have problems, depending what part of the world you are in, the other place to look is in: http://cbl.abuseat.org/ Use a search engine and you will find dozens more of them out there.

.... and if anyone finds fault in what I have said above, sorry, but this is not what I do for a living. I'm sure there are smarter people than me out there earning $$$$ for this. Problem was I couldn't find one when I need them and even if I had, I probably couldn't have afforded the cost of hiring them.

So Good Luck and let us know what happens there in Mauritus, Warren

Neil: Sorry; hope I haven't stood on any toes. WATF

Important Trivia: On September 21, 1847 Mauritus became the fifth country in the world to issue postage stamps, of which the Blue Penny Stamp has become the most famous stamp in the world.
